LINK TC 96 and 97:DavidT , David Murdock and Bernie attended the Edmonton Conference. The conference was excellent with good facilities. The only concern was that there were only a small number of paying registrants leaving Edmonton Freenet with a financial loss.Bernie was elected to the Telecommunities Board. Jon Gerrard, Minister for Secretary of State for Science and Technology was present. He is a real supporter of community nets. The rift is still there with TC and Industry Canada but this seems to be improving. The ccn TC97 planning committtee is proposing that we have a membership meeting to discuss the 1997 conference and look for membership involvement. This meeting will also discuss the commercial policy. Bernie, Rob and Joan will try to organize this meeting. Joan will check the availability of the Spring Garden Rd. Program room. Volunteerism: David reported on the discussions on volunteerism that took place at the TC conference. He bought a volunteer recruitment kit while at the conference. The kit includes a video and a workshop guide and materials. The board then watched the video. Key points are to define the job, define the qualifications, research possible names and prioritize list, set up an interview team, interview the most qualified person, hire the volunteer. It was agreed that we would start brainstorming on line about the volunteer process and needs that would lead us to a job description for a volunteer coordinator. Doug agreed to summarize the discussion. Liability Insurance: Hugh is investigating purchasing liability insurance for board members. Letters will be sent to HRDC, Halifax Reg. Municipality and Clean NS . The Bernie has drafted the letter to HRDC and will do a draft for Clean Nova Scotia. Rob, Bernie and David will meet to draft this letter.
